A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR:
Since 1975 the YMCA Camp Indian Springs has been providing camping experiences for the community. And once again, we are offering 5, 6 and 7 daylong sessions. We strive each year to better accommodate age-appropriate camping activities. We are also offering our ever successful Week-End Camp program for those campers of appropriate age wishing to stay multiple sessions.
Camp remains committed to providing programs that are safe, fun and exciting for returning campers as well as our new friends. We have extended our morning activity times and added another early afternoon activity as per the many request from campers for longer Optional (Paid) activity time.
We will also be embarking on another all NEW Day Camp program for our local community. This new feature will introduce camp to younger campers and will enhance our programming opportunities for years to come.
As always I am committed to improving our program and facilities while building on the great traditions that have made YMCA Camp Indian Springs a favorite for all campers.

WHAT IS CAMP?
YMCA Camp Indian Springs is a fun, innovative, yet traditional summer camp where campers learn new skills, face and conquer challenges and make friendships they will cherish for a lifetime. Our caring staff will lead your camper through exciting activities and serve as a role model for the YMCA’s core values of Honesty, Caring, Respect and Responsibility.
The YMCA has offered camping at Camp Indian Springs since 1975. Built on over 100 years of camping excellence, the YMCA did not invent camping but we have all but perfected it.
YMCA Camp Indian Springs is a branch of the Capital Region YMCA and is located in beautiful Wakulla County, just a short 30-minute drive south of the state capitol, Tallahassee. We serve a diverse population with families coming from nearby cities and states, as well as other countries. We value diversity and celebrate ability by making camp a possibility for children without regard to race, religion, sex or financial situation. We welcome all children and families to experience what YMCA Camp Indian Springs has to offer.

WHAT IS ACA?
The American Camp Association is a non-profit organization that members join voluntarily. With this in mind, YMCA Camp Indian Springs has been a member for some 15 years and on a semi annual basis is visited by this organization and maintains over 300 standards of operation in camping. The standards establish guidelines for needed policies, procedures and practices. The camp, then, is responsible for on-going implementation of those policies. The standards are the industry standards and government recognized. YMCA Camp Indian Springs is accredited by the American Camp Association for all program and site standards. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE?
The purpose of Camp is to inspire every camper to become the best they can be. Each day the campers are presented with a new lesson, a new challenge, and a new chance to grow, to make friends and learn.
The YMCA is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the Spirit, Mind and Body of all participants; and Camp Indian Springs is the key to our mission to inspire and help children and staff excel in every aspect of their life.
Camp helps campers increase social skills that are nurtured in the cabin unit where campers meet children and staff from diverse backgrounds, share memories with old friends, and explore cabin unity with the leadership of a professional role model.
Our main purpose is to provide a safe, fun atmosphere for children to experience the outdoors and grow as individuals.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT WHEN MY CHILD RETURNS FROM CAMP?
When your child returns from camp, you may notice that they have a new sense of self confidence and self esteem; increased social skills and sense of unity in groups; and a greater awareness in applying honesty, caring, respect and responsibility in their day to day life.
Parents may see campers grow with better communication skills, increased comfort in group settings and the increased ability to get in front of peer groups to lead in different social settings. Parents may also see campers increase their appreciation for diverse groups and cultures. Campers may demonstrate a better sense of their role in society and how one person affects the lives of others. Parents may even see campers improve study habits, enjoy their siblings, act before asked with chores or home work or even have a stronger commitment to spirituality and improving their personal life-style.

WHAT ARE THE PROGRAMS OFFERED?
YMCA Camp Indian Springs’ Residential Summer Camp Program includes 9 camp sessions separated into age-appropriate lengths of 5, 6 or 7 day-long stays.
Our 5-day camp session is aimed at our younger or first-time campers and serve as a great introduction to over-night camp. The campers will participate with their cabin-mates in the core camp activities and experience the fun and tradition of resident camping.
The 6 and 7-day camp sessions are aimed at slightly older campers and those interested in our optional activity areas. In these sessions, each camper chooses from the core activities or pre-registered for optional activities to build their individualized morning schedule.
The 7th session of the summer is always a highlight as it is our tradition to host a “Deaf Week”. We celebrate ability by welcoming campers, leaders and volunteers with varying levels of hearing ability to enjoy camp alongside hearing campers and staff.
In an effort to stay current with YMCA Resident Camping trends, we have continued with this summer’s age/interest-appropriate schedule to best serve our campers.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN “CORE ACTIVITIES” AND “OPTIONAL/PAID ACTIVITIES”, AND WHICH WILL MY CHILD PARTICIPATE IN?
YMCA Camp Indian Springs is a traditional Y Camp with optional/paid activities in addition to the traditional programs offered.
“Core Activities” are those that every camper may participate in and are included in the camp fee. These include:

In the afternoon, cabin-groups will participate in two core activities of their choosing in order to allow all campers the opportunity to experience what YMCA Camp Indian Springs has to offer.
“Optional/Paid Activities” are those that have an additional fee to participate. You must pre-register your camper for these activities and they each have a minimum age to participate. This year we have extended the activity times for participants to enjoy these activities. These include:

During the summer months we do often experience rain in the afternoons. Every attempt will be made to follow this schedule and allow campers to participate in the activities they have chosen, but will cancel any activities that cannot be safely engaged in due to inclement weather. In case of severe weather, we have arranged “rainy day activities” for them in lieu of regularly scheduled class periods. We have found that rainy days are often a welcome change for campers as they enjoy the added cabin-group time and change of schedule!

WHAT IS THE “LEADERS-IN-TRAINING” PROGRAM AT CAMP INDIAN SPRINGS?
YMCA Camp Indian Springs has a proud tradition of growing future leaders through the Leaders-In-Training, or LIT, Program. This program is ideal for teens between the ages of 14 and 17 who have a sincere interest in learning leadership skills and helping with younger campers.
- LIT 1 and LIT 2 are for first and second year LIT participants. These teens are still considered campers, however they will participate in leadership training activities based on the “Learning Leadership” program developed by Michael Bradwein, a camping and teen expert in the field. This program is two weeks long with the option to participate in the Week-end Camp-A-Way program between weeks.
- LIT 3 are for teens at least 16 years old with past experience in the LIT program. Participants must have a strong service mentality and strong desire to learn and grow leadership skills. LIT 3s will apply and interview just as a staff member would and will make a 2-week commitment of service. Participants do not have direct camper supervision duties but will assist in program areas and shadow staff in various ways.
- The LIT program is a privilege and participants must seek to be role models for younger campers.

WHO ARE THE STAFF AND WHAT ARE THEIR QUALIFICATIONS?
YMCA Camp Indian Springs’ Primary and Support Staff known as, Cabin/Activity Leaders and Support Staff are “Professional Role Models” and will demonstrate the YMCA core values of honesty, caring, respect and responsibility at all times. These leaders are responsible individuals who posses a strong service mentality, love of working with children and dedication to providing a fun and safe experience for your child.

- Culturally and Regionally diverse. We have leaders joining us from all over the world, the United States as well as local leaders who have grown up with YMCA Camp Indian Springs.
- Handpicked by the Support Staff team based on successful past experience working with children, certifications for teaching program activities, leadership qualities and a strong dedication to positive work with youth.
- Successful completion of a background screening and positive reference checks.
- All staff are CPR and First Aid certified.
- All waterfront staff holds a current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification.
- Receive one full week of staff training on such issues as Child Abuse Prevention and Reporting, Stress Management techniques, Team Building, how to deal with camper issues including bullying and homesickness, Emergency Procedures and an array of camp topics.
- And finally, LOVE to work with KIDS!
Our leaders are here to help you child have a fun and exciting camp experience. They will always be attentive to the needs of campers and available for your child to share concerns or questions. Please take the time on check-in day to meet your camper’s leader and learn about the wonderful role models who will help to make your child’s camp experience a memorable one.

WHAT IS THE CAMP STORE?
This year we will once again be offering a camp store with a variety of items for your child to purchase during their stay at camp such as drinks (juice, soda, water) and snacks (crackers, candy, ice cream). PLEASE DO NOT SEND ANY MONEY WITH YOUR CHILD. Every child will have a credit at the store based on how much you have banked prior to camp. If you would like to bank additional money for them, please do so ahead of time through the registration process or by turning it in to a staff member at check-in. We recommend no more than $3 per day to spend at the store. Any remaining money your child does not spend will be donated to our Campership fund to help those who may not have the same financial resources.

CAN I VISIT OR CALL MY CHILD AT CAMP?
Parents are discouraged from visiting or calling campers during the session. Camp is a time for children to grow and gain self-esteem through experiencing independence. Our experience shows that if a child is visited they will grow homesick and wish to return home. If you want to be at Camp with your child, please, sign up for Y-Guides or Family Camp!
Campers cannot receive or place phone calls while at camp. Any messages that need to be relayed to a camper can be sent by telephone or emailed to the camp. All messages will be relayed through the Unit Directors. Please do not send a cell phone to camp as it interferes with the camp programs and will be confiscated and returned to you upon departure.
Please help prepare your child for camp by expressing enthusiasm for their chance to show independence but do remind them that you will think about them while they are away. Let them know that calling home is not an option, however they may write and receive letters.

WHERE DO I SEND MY CHILD MAIL?
Campers love mail! You are encouraged to write to them to lessen the degree of homesickness they might feel. Please remember to stress happy events and show support in your letters. Ask about activities and new friends but avoid talking too much of home life as that sometimes may spark homesickness. Sending your child some mail will make their day!
Here’s how to do it:
On the Thursday or Friday BEFORE YOUR CHILD LEAVES FOR CAMP, mail your letter or package to camp. Mailing an item on this day will allow enough time for the package to arrive before your child leaves camp! Please do not send packages that need signatures to be collected from the camp staff.

Your parcel should arrive before Thursday (and hopefully before Tuesday) so that your child can send mail to you, provide them with a pad and pen, a couple of envelopes (with your home address pre-written on it), and stamps. Please make sure that your return address is clearly printed in case we need to send your mail back.
Camper’s love care packages, but please do not include food or candy. These items cause animal and insect problems in the cabins and we want our campers’ stay to be as comfortable as possible. Excellent choices for care packages include magazines, pictures, friendship bracelets for cabin-mates, joke/puzzle books and small games to play in the cabin. HOW DO WE HANDLE CAMPER DISCIPLINE?
The YMCA is an organization dedicated to helping all individuals realize their fullest potential. Camp rules and policies having been carefully established to meet the emotional and physical needs of our campers and to help ensure that camp is FUN and SAFE!
Orientation:
All campers begin their stay with an orientation to camp and all program areas. They will meet the camp staff and clearly discuss camp rules, which stress the YMCA core values of honesty, caring, respect and responsibility.
If there is a problem/incident…
Campers and Cabin Leaders will work together to resolve problems and make appropriate choices. If the problem persists, a staff member will discuss the issue with the camper who will fill out a behavior contract. This contract establishes what the problem was and allows the camper to decide what steps they will take to correct it. If the problem continues, you will be contacted to discuss the issue and help us determine the appropriate course of action for your camper. Any further problems will result in dismissal from camp without a refund. Parent/Guardian shall be responsible for immediate transportation home.
Reason for the Rules:
Please keep in mind that our program has unique requirements. Our standards are a result of the high expectations we must meet to provide 24-hour care for the campers we serve. The natural environment, outdoor activity schedule, and resident setting all require that we take safety very seriously. If a child exhibits defiance, lack of respect, fighting, stealing, or any other behavior that puts either themselves or others in danger, they cannot remain as a participant in our program.
It is not abnormal for some children to misbehave. This is a fact. In addition, when they do, it is necessary to impose corrections so that they will not repeat actions that are antisocial, wrong, harmful, or not in the spirit of Camp.
That being the case, what might we do to discipline your child? The YMCA does not support any forms of discipline which may be harmful, cruel, embarrassing or neglectful. Your child’s needs and safety are always a top priority, even when dealing with misbehavior. We emphasize the use of natural and logical consequences whenever possible and will make every attempt to maintain your child’s privacy in personal matters of discipline.

WHAT IS THE PAYMENT & REFUNDS POLICY?
Payment of the Camp deposit and fees can be made in cash, by check, or with a credit card by mailing them to the camp address.
All deposits are non-refundable. In case of medical emergency and only with a physician’s written note, will a cancellation prior to camp be returned, less the deposit amount. Cancellations prior to May 15th will receive a credit for use later that summer and only where and when available dates that are age-appropriate. There is no refund available for homesickness and if a camper is a no-show for a registered session, there will be no credit or refund. The camp director reserves the right to dismiss any camper who violates camp rules and policies. No refund will ever be made in the case of dismissal. Please also note that there is a $25 fee for all returned checks.
The YMCA must receive full payment by Mid May for June sessions, Mid June for July sessions and Mid July for August sessions or full payment if your register after that guideline date.
Parents who are applying for a Campership must still place a $100 non-refundable deposit of their own.

CAN MY CHILD BE IN A CABIN WITH THEIR FRIEND?
Yes, we can place buddy pairs in cabins together. Please have your child pick one friend who is of like sex and age (within a year) and make sure that friend also picks your child. We will honor 1 (one) request per camper if the other camper requests them as a cabin buddy also. We will make every effort to assign your child to the best cabin for them. With this in mind, we will pre assign campers based on their registration form and we cannot guarantee a specific cabin assignment.

HOW DOES CAMP HANDLE HEALTH ISSUES?
We do our best to make your child’s camp experience accident and illness free. However, in the event that something does occur we are prepared.
- Our health care specialist is on site at camp during the entire time your camper is here. Our specialist will treat minor cuts, scrapes and illnesses. Also, we will have a Registered Nurse on call that will visit Camp throughout the week for added support.
- You will check in with the health care specialist on the first day of camp. At that time, any medications need to be turned into the infirmary in their original bottles with the original doctors prescription/dosage clearly marked on the pharmacy labels. Please also share any health information that will make your child’s stay more enjoyable. The more we know about our camper’s needs, the better we can serve them and ensure a positive experience.
- In the event of sickness or emergency you will be notified by phone. Please make sure we have all your contact information on the health forms. If parents or guardians live out of town or cannot be reached, all campers will be treated at Tallahassee Memorial Regional Medical Center and will be accompanied by two staff members.
- We understand your interest in privacy relating to your child’s medical needs and will do our best to keep all infirmary visits and medications a matter of private business.
The Health Center staff will contact families if:
- your child spends the night in the health center
- your child has been to multiple sick calls for the same illness
- there is an injury to the head, back, eye or a severe cut or injury
- your child has a fever for more than 24 hours
- there is a medical emergency
A physician’s written order must accompany all prescription and non-prescription medications. This includes Tylenol, Motrin, multivitamins, cough medicine, and homeopathic remedies.
- For campers who take prescribed medication: Please refrain from changing, reducing or suspending a medication prior to the camp session. Children often have very dramatic behavior changes when their medication is adjusted or suspended. Our cabin/activity leaders are in charge of a group of children and cannot be responsible for the close, personalized supervision a child may need while adjusting to a change in medication. Please discuss with the Camp Director any anticipated changes or medical information prior to camp to ensure we can meet your needs.

WHERE DO I DROP OFF & PICK-UP MY CHILD FOR CAMP?
Sending your child off to Camp on that first day is a challenging experience at best. You will receive a reminder call prior to your camp dates. All we ask is that you sign your child in and out on those days, as well as check-in all medication and give any other last minute information.
In short, the procedure will be as follows:
1. Arrive at camp at the predetermined time and follow all signs.
2. Park in designated areas only and please do not block driveways.
3. Go to the Boy’s or Girl’s Check-In Table & Check-In or Out
At Check-In: Please sign your child IN, visit the Health Care table to check-in medications and discuss any pertinent information and take care of any outstanding payments.
At Check-Out: Please sign your child OUT, pick up medications and the Camper Evaluation Form.
4. You may help your child to take their luggage to the cabins and meet their leaders. Several staff will be on hand to assist in this process.
5. Lead your child to his/her Cabin-group.
6. Introduce yourself to the Cabin Leaders and share any important information about your camper.
7. Say good-bye to your child or welcome them home.
8. Upon check-out, please visit the Lost &Found area to claim any misplaced items.
9. Have a good week or rest of the year.
CHECK-IN TIME BEGINS at 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. Please do not arrive prior to that.
CHECK-OUT for all sessions ending on Thusrday & Fridays is 3:30 p.m.
CHECK-OUT for all sessions ending on Saturdays is 10:30 a.m.
EROSION CONTROL PROJECT: Please note that we are changing the traffic patterns and areas of Camp to help preserve the property as well provide an erosion control project around the spring. This will dramatically change the walking and driving patterns in and around Camp. Our goal is to have one access road that will circle each side of camp and develop walking trails. Please be patient with us as we help preserve Camp for the next generation. And please observe the new traffic barriers on your next visit.

WHAT DOES MY CHILD NEED TO PACK?

Help your child pack for camp to ensure that they are bringing appropriate items and so that you can keep an inventory (this will help at the end of camp). Remember to clearly mark all items with camper’s name, initials, or distinctive emblem. Please make sure suitcases and bags are closed and tied securely. All items on DO NOT BRING list will be confiscated and returned to parents upon departure from camp and may result in the immediate dismissal from camp at the parent/guardian expense.
The YMCA is not responsible for lost or stolen items. We reserve the right to check all luggage for illegal items and the YMCA staff may deem luggage searches necessary if we suspect any wrong doing. NOTE: We specifically prohibit items like cell phones due to homesickness and security issues. Please us enforce our core value of Honesty by assuring that you camper ahs not packed items that are prohibited.
On checkout day, please visit the lost and found area and inquire about any items that may have been confiscated. YMCA Camp Indian Springs cannot be held responsible for mailing items, which were lost or left at camp. Please leave with all items that were brought. CAN MY CHILD BRING THEIR OWN HORSE/SKATEBOARD/PAINTBALL GEAR?
Yes, your camper may bring their own equipment for the optional/paid activities, however it is not a requirement. Camp will provide skateboards, paint ball equipment and all necessary safety gear for these activities. Inline skates will not be provided, so campers who would like to participate in inline skating must bring their own.
Horses and riding equipment will be provided by camp, but participants may choose to bring their own horse. In this case you must call at least a week ahead of the camp session and provide us with all necessary instructions for care as well as current vaccinations and proof of a negative Coggins test.
All equipment brought from home must be clearly marked with the camper’s name and session and Camp cannot be held liable for damage or loss of items.
Equipment and horses will be checked in and out with a staff member when your camper arrives or departs from camp.

HOW DO I GET TO CAMP?
Parents may bring campers or send them by bus or plane to Tallahassee. The camp staff will pick up campers arriving at the Tallahassee airport or bus station. Just provide in writing, their arrival information; day, date, time, flight numbers, etc. by mail, email or fax to camp at least 10 days prior to the first day of camp.
From Tallahassee (State Capitol Building): Take Monroe St. south to Orange Avenue. Take a right onto Orange Avenue. Take a left onto Crawfordville Highway (319 S). Take Crawfordville Highway south, past Capital Circle South (Burger King will be on the left corner). Make a left onto SR 61 (the road splits into a Y, veer left - Note that the turn comes quickly after the only sign so stay in the left lane). You will go 1.5 miles and pass a yellow blinking caution light (County Road 2204) Continue on SR 61 south until you reach the red blinking light (anotehr 6.3 miles). Make a right onto Bloxham Cut-Off Road (HWY 267). Take Bloxham Cut-Off for about .6 of a mile and the main entrance to camp will be on the left. There is a mail box and Totem Pole as well as a camp sign.
From Crawfordville: Take HWY 319 North to HWY 267 (Bloxham Cut-Off Road). Take a right onto HWY 267 and travel about four miles. The main entrance will be on the right.
From I-10: Exit onto US 90 W (exit 209). Take US 90 West (towards Tallahassee) to Capital Circle NE. Turn left onto Capital Circle SE. Take Capital Circle SE to Crawfordville HWY (HWY 319 S). Turn left onto Crawfordville HWY. Make a left onto SR 61 (the road splits into a Y, veer left. Note that the turn comes quickly after the only sign so stay in the left lane). ANY ADVICE TO HELP ME PREPARE MY CHILD FOR CAMP?
You can help your child get excited about camp by doing the following:
- Ask them if they have any questions or concerns about camp. If you need additional information to help answer, please call the camp office. Having answers about what to expect will help your child feel more comfortable.
- Do not mention the word “homesickness”. Sometimes children experience this because they anticipated they would. Instead, empower your child by being positive about their ability to be away from home.
- Emphasize the exciting things they will be experiencing rather than focusing on fears.
- Remind them that there will be no phone calls between you. Prepare them to write letters by sending pre-stamped and written envelopes, paper and pen.
- Ensure them that you will communicate either through email or letters, and then follow through. It will make their day!
- Discuss what they should do if they have a problem at camp. Encourage them to talk with their cabin leader when they have a concern, or to ask to see the health care specialist.
- Remind them that you will miss them, but you are excited for this opportunity. Some children become homesick because they worry about how their parents are doing without them!
- Pack a few familiar items for your camper to decorate his/her bunk space. Pictures, notes, stuffed animals or a favorite blanket help to make camp feel like home.
- You know your child best! Please anticipate any problems and share your concerns with the cabin leader so that they may be prepared.

WHAT IS OUR CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION POLICY?
"In our efforts to maximize your camper's safety, we employ the following policies."
YMCA camp employees will never be alone with a camper.
YMCA staff may not initiate or accept supervisory responsibility with YMCA members and participants outside approved YMCA activities and programs.
All minors will be supervised while utilizing the buddy system for restroom and shower times.
The YMCA discourages all outside contact between camp staff and participants including the use of e-mail and on line forums and chat rooms.
WHAT IS THE FINAL WORD?
As with any document, this one was written in late December, changes may occur. The YMCA and its staff reserve the right to make changes with regard to the program. We anticipate this will not be necessary, however life is full of changes and we can never predict what may occur days or months down the line. We appreciate your thoughtful consideration and participation.
