YMCA Mission Statement: "To put Christian principals into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all." Why Do I Support the YMCA...
I credit my love for scuba diving to the YMCA. It was here I learned how to swim at my local YMCA in Tampa, Florida at an early age with my family. Later, while finishing my Master Degree at FSU, I got involved with their Academic Diving Program, which was sanctioned by the University and the YMCA of the USA. It was here I was afforded the opportunity to learn to scuba dive and work my way through the ranks to become a scuba instructor through their rigorous leadership program. This program not only aided me in learning how to teach, but also advanced my skills in public speaking. When I began to teach outside of the University, I want to give back to the institution that granted me so much. I also wanted to offer YMCA members (ages 12 and up) at the Capital Region YMCA a quality life learning scuba experience at a low cost. Currently class offerings are during the spring and summer months. Teaching at the Capital Region YMCA has broadened my ability to help out in other ways besides teaching. By branching out, I was able to work with Camp Director to incorporate a guided cave diving program that generates funding for the Camp through diver donations during the Camp’s off season. Divers in the cave diving community that meet or exceed the criteria to cave dive at YMCA Camp Indian Springs can submit a diver application with a copy of their credentials and current dive insurance to one of the Camp selected cave diving guides. The guide makes the reservation to cave dive with the applicant diver. All guided divers are encouraged to give back to the Camp through a donation to the Camp. In its first year, this program has raised approximately $ 3,000 to date in diver donations and cave map sales. Divers have also came out during Camp Directed work days over the past several years to give back the camp in volunteering their time and help.
