YMCA Mission Statement: "To put Christian principals into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all."
Why Do I Support the YMCA...
“100 years from now
it will not matter what my bank account was,
the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove,
but the world may be different
because I was important in the life of a child…”
About 25 years ago, I stepped onto a basketball court, wearing a red “Y Winner” t-shirt… a nine year-old giving little thought to the journey I was about to begin. That next summer, I took an even bigger step, further away from home, under the beautiful trees of YMCA Camp Indian Springs. As my parents drove away, some initial anxiety set in, but was quickly replaced with excitement, laughter, adventure and learning. And I never looked back! I went back to Camp every summer after that, and was involved with other YMCA programs as I grew up – Challenge Leadership retreats, Model City Commission, and later worked as a camp leader, program director, fitness instructor, and Y volunteer. The core values of honesty, caring, respect and responsibility that the YMCA program staff taught and exhibited have remained with me over the years, in both my personal and professional life.

-
Did that camp leader who acted a bit goofy in a skit realize that I learned it was OK to be myself and step outside of my comfort zone (and did he know I would later go work in Australia for a year, because I now thrive on stepping outside of that comfort zone)?
-
And that one who sent a postcard to my parents and told them how I showed leadership in the cabin group – did she know that I didn’t realize before then how my actions influenced others (and that I still have that postcard in my scrapbook)?
-
And how about the one who encouraged me with Bible verses when we worked together as leaders – did she know how my Christian faith grew that summer (and that this has been my strength in facing challenges as an adult)?
…The values, leadership skills, and friendships I’ve developed through the YMCA have been some of the most enduring blessings in my life.
I was lucky. Many children today miss out on opportunities like these. The YMCA made a difference in my life, and my goal is to help the YMCA make a difference in the lives of children who may not otherwise be able to experience the unique environment of camp. When the price of camp registration is beyond a family’s means, your donation will help send a kid to camp…
…and 100 years from now, the world may be different.
